Across Broders,
Between the Breeze:
A Journey Tracing Migration Stories in Eastern China, 1950s-1990s

This thesis book unfolds a research and design journey through the shifting landscapes of migration and modernization in postwar Eastern China. Structured in three chapters: Across Borders, Tracing Distances; She Drifted, and the Study of How She Drifted, and Between Chinatowns. The publication interweaves oral histories, field studies, archival research, and visual storytelling.

From the linguistic and cultural traces of the Hakka diaspora to stories of 1990s factory workers and personal family archives, the book reflects on how labor, geography, and emotion shape collective memory.

Through essays, image sequences, and post-thesis experiments, it explores design as a form of witnessing . translating historical research into poetic and tactile narrative form.
